"Chronicles from 1994"
Magic The Gathering Old School
"The Spellbook of the Eternal Present: Knowledge, Strategy, and Authenticity"
The Genesis
The birth of Magic and the Garfield legacy.
In 1993, mathematician Richard Garfield brought Magic The Gathering to life, forever revolutionizing the world of gaming. The debut of the Alpha edition at the Gen Con convention was such an overwhelming success that millions of cards sold out instantly. The concept of collecting and building one's own spellbook immediately captivated players, combining deep strategy with iconic illustrations. Those original booster packs from 1993 did not just contain simple pieces of cardboard, but the very foundations of a myth. From those legendary first print runs, Old School begins: the pure origin of an eternal game.
The allure of old school
"This game lives in an eternal present of superimposed probabilities, where time is not a flowing line, but an illusion resolved by the entanglement of our moves."
1. "An eternal present of superimposed probabilities"
- In physics: Quantum superposition (think of Schrödinger's cat) states that until we look inside the box, a particle exists in all possible states simultaneously. Everything is infinite potential.
- In Old School Magic: The format "stopped" in 1994-95. There are no new expansions disrupting the game every three months. This means the meta (the card pool) is crystallized. When you sit at the table with an Old School deck, the game belongs neither to the past nor the future: you live in an eternal present where those specific 60 cards always hold the exact same infinite potential they did over 30 years ago.
2. "Where time is not a flowing line, but an illusion..."
- In physics: For Einstein and modern quantum physics, time is not a river flowing from past to future in an absolute way. Time is relative, and at a fundamental level, the past and the future already exist together.
- In Old School Magic: Chronological time is an illusion. Away from the table you are in 2026, but as soon as you shuffle your deck, time barriers collapse. You are playing with the exact same rules, the same artwork, and the same card layouts from thirty years ago. Time has stopped; nostalgia fades because you are living that era right now, not just remembering it.
3. "...resolved by the entanglement of our moves."
- In physics: Quantum entanglement occurs when two particles become so closely linked that what happens to one instantly influences the other, even if they are light-years apart. Space and time cease to matter to them.
- In Old School Magic: The correlated "particles" are you, your opponent, and your plays (moves). The bond (entanglement) you create by dropping an Alpha land, casting a Black Lotus, or flipping a Chaos Orb instantly connects the kid you were in the '90s (or the very idea of that era) with the player you are today. The practical act of playing (the moves) is what "resolves" the illusion of time, merging past and present into a single, perfect moment.

The Perfect Chaos:
The Geometry of Deckbuilding
"When 60 individual cards unite to form a perfect spellbook, the probabilities reach a perfect equilibrium in a system where every single card corresponds to a meticulously studied design; the unsettling and unpredictable quantum scenarios of single draws, with their burden of improbability, are capable of channeling the uncertainty of a perfect strategic plan and a pure Old School strategy into a perfect chaos: a moment where everything must be reinvented and adapted, always in motion yet enclosed within a finite cosmos, bringing the game back into the realm of a solid and harmonious architecture of the origins, never identical to itself, like infinite universes, similar yet diverse."

Official Tournament Rules (n00bcon Standard)
The Old School format (often referred to as 93/94) follows the modern core rules of Magic, but strictly restricts the card pool to the very first sets in the game's history. Following the pure Swedish philosophy (n00bcon), only English versions of the cards that retain their original artwork and classic frame are allowed.

Banned cards
Note on Ante cards: All cards referencing the ante rule (such as Contract from Below, Darkpact, and Tempest Efreet) are strictly banned and must be removed from the deck before playing.
Official errata for dexterity cards
- Chaos Orb: 1, Tap: Choose a nontoken permanent on the battlefield. If Chaos Orb is on the battlefield, flip Chaos Orb onto the battlefield from a height of at least one foot. If Chaos Orb turns over completely at least once during the flip, and touches the chosen permanent, destroy that permanent. Then destroy Chaos Orb.
- Falling Star: Choose any number of non-overlapping creatures on the battlefield. Flip Falling Star onto the battlefield from a height of at least one foot. If Falling Star turns over completely at least once during the flip, it deals 3 damage to each chosen creature it touches. Any creatures damaged by Falling Star that are not destroyed become tapped.
Fair Flip Note: A fair flip is always guaranteed; you are allowed to temporarily move the target card to the center of the playing area to get a clear flip. Touching is checked only once the card comes to a complete rest on the table, not while it is in the air or if it bounces off.
